~Glossary

Fafnir (フアフニール Fuafunīru) is a large dragon that breathes fire. It is the Guardian of the Roots of Yggdrasil.

Finding Fafnir[ | ]

Revealing the Ankh[ | ]

The Ankh is revealed by the Trickster after you break the head dripping poison on him in (F-3).

Finding the Ankh Jewel[ | ]

Place a weight on the upper-left pedestal to open a path to the Ankh in Roots of Yggdrasil (B-3). Do not cross the path (it is lined with crushers); instead, throw shurikens from the right side to break the left wall, opening a path to the chest.

Fighting Fafnir[ | ]

Attacks[ | ]

Fafnir has three primary attacks. The first is its fire-breath, which it uses when it approaches from the top of the screen. Fafnir will breath fire in a sweeping motion which covers part of the floor. The fire deals relatively little damage, but Fafnir's body deals a significant amount.

The second attack is its fireball attack, which it uses when it approaches from the bottom of the screen. It will spit fireballs in a sweeping motion that begins either horizontally or vertically. If Fafnir's head is close to the ground when it begins spitting, it will spit fireballs horizontally first. These can be dodged by ducking.

The third attack is a set of homing barbs that Fafnir will launch while retreating when low on health.

Weak points[ | ]

Fafnir's weak point is its head. After taking sufficient damage (2 un-upgraded whip strikes), it will retreat and attack from a new position.

Strategies[ | ]

Fafnir always alternates between top and bottom of the screen, so its position is predictable. It moves in a pattern of top-right, bottom-right, top-left, bottom-left.

The easiest time to damage it is when it is approaching from the bottom half of the screen, as you do not need to jump. Watch its head, and if its head is low to the ground when it goes to begin spitting, make sure to duck under its fireball attack. If its head is not close to the ground, you do not need to duck.

Fafnir takes 18 strikes with the whip on Hard Mode.

Origin[ | ]

Fafnir is based on the dragon Fáfnir from Nordic mythology. It is implied that he used to be a dwarf who killed his father Hreiðmarr to steal the ring Andvaranaut, which had been cursed. He turned into a dragon to guard the ring and his treasure hoard.
